Appeals court won’t allow contest of BP settlement issue

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans voted 8-5 against rehearing London oil giant BP Plc’s settlement issue on May 19, effectively preserving the ruling that U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier made earlier this year that stipulates the 2012 settlement that BP made with oil spill claimants must be upheld, WCSC reported.

Earlier, BP had asked the appeals court to set a new trial after the three-judge panel ruled in March that businesses who claimed they had been affected by the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill didn’t need to provide documentation or evidence that directly proved damages caused by the oil spill. BP spokesman Geoff Morrell said the company is disappointed by this decision and continues to consider its legal options
