Around 100 people already in jail for filing fraudulent BP oil spill claims

The United States Department of Justice has reported that over 100 people have already been imprisoned for filing fraudulent oil spill claims against London-based oil giant British Petroleum.

Attorneys who represent the claimants said the level of fraud was minor relative to the number of claims paid out. BP’s first compensation platform, the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, settled more than 220,000 claims. By the end of 2016, another 153,000 claims were paid out under a settlement agreement with attorneys of the plaintiffs in 2012. According to court orders issued in 2016, only 1,000 active cases remain in relation to the BP oil spill. In 2013, BP said it was paying around $100 million per week and said the programs handing out payments were not taking sufficient efforts to identify fraud.
