Louisiana parish lawsuits dismissed in BP trial

On Monday, February 24 the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier’s ruling to dismiss lawsuits filed against BP by 11 Louisiana parishes.

The parishes that brought suit against BP are Cameron, Jefferson, Lafourche, Iberia, Orleans, Plaquemines, Terrebonne, St. Bernard, St. Mary, St. Charles, and St. Tammany. According to Judges Edith Jones, Rhesa Barksdale, and Leslie Southwick, the parish lawsuits are already covered by federal law.

BP still faces $18.6 billion worth of civil fines due Clean Water Act violations. BP has paid out more than $42 billion on spill cleanup expenses, accident payments, and private claim payments.
